The Elms is named after the former Elms Golf Club, which sat on the stretch of land between Albion Road and Islington Avenue, north of Hadrian Drive. On the other side of Hadrian was the Pine Point Golf Course. The Humber Valley Golf Course remains at the eastern edge, bordered by the Humber River, marking the outer limit of the area, which is almost entirely residential with a few commercial pockets. Just under a quarter of the land is zoned green, though the nearby airport interrupts any bucolic reveries. Still, it’s one of the nicer areas in Rexdale and many of the area’s original families remain here (including some who worked on the Avro Arrow), joined by a host of new buyers attracted by the lower prices.
HOUSING STOCK: The two-storey Georgian-Revival homes, bungalows and backsplits are predominantly from the 1950s and 1960s, built during the region’s golf heyday.
BARGAIN ZONES: Prices are lower east of Albion Road, near a series of housing projects.
THE VERDICT: For the budget-conscious buyer, it’s a great location, with shopping conveniently nearby and plenty of schools, such as Braeburn Junior School, the Elms Jr. MS and the independent Timothy Christian School.
