The solid early-20th-century bungalows in this hilly ’hood make good starter homes for those who want a backyard and don’t mind small square footage. You can still get a house for less than $300,000, with the goal of building something bigger later in life—many of the lots have been divided and now hold two-storey semi-detached homes, which sell for just under $400,000 each. On the downside, shopping can be a problem: the original Italian immigrants have moved off the Eglinton strip, and while the recent influx of South Americans, Sri Lankans and Africans are trying to make a go of it, much of the business finds its way to the big-box stores to the north. Prospect Cemetery runs parallel to Dufferin, adding a spooky but leafy-green touch.
HOUSING STOCK: The area’s streets are lined with an eclectic mix of century-old row houses, 1920s two-storeys and European-influenced bungalows, along with a few rebuilds.
BARGAIN ZONES: On the whole, the entire neighbourhood is one of the city’s more affordable pockets; homes on the western fringe near Weston Road tend to be even more of a steal.
THE VERDICT: This is an affordable neighbourhood, where buyers can find some reasonably good values for about $300,000, or perhaps even a fixer-upper in the high $200s.
