Watch him bring a boisterous group of four-year-olds to instant attention and it becomes clear that the sensei, Paulo Cardoso, has a way with kids. As parents marvel from the sidelines, Cardoso puts his pint-sized charges through the basics of karate and jiu-jitsu, weaving in messages about bullying and self-defence. Kids move through levels (from white to black belt) at their own pace, but most need about three months to master all the moves.
Hours:
fall–spring M–Sa, summer M–F; hours vary
How much:
three months $285; one-year membership $720
