Say you’re a Miss Universe contestant. You’re optimistic about your chances of taking the crown, but blowing a year’s tuition on a frock for the evening gown competition is a risky move. Enter Ooh La La, where bridesmaids, sweet 16s, prom queens and, yes, pageant contestants can snag a red carpet–worthy dress for less than $500, with dresses starting at just $50. Resembling the rainbow-hued closet of a Vegas showgirl, racks are crammed with billowy chiffon full-length gowns, sequined baby doll numbers and bugle-beaded A-line dresses. No-frills shopping at its best, rolling racks are loosely organized by colour and not much else. A few bridesmaid dresses can be ordered to size, but otherwise it’s entirely off-the-rack shopping. Elaborate wedding gowns are available in the $1,000 range; simpler destination style dresses start at just $295.
