Opened for play in July 2007, the latest creation by Canadian architect Graham Cooke—a three-time winner of Golf Digest’s best new course in Canada award—is a links lovers’ dream. Piper’s Heath is a challenging course where you get to practise your bump and run, and course management. Surrounded by meadows and rural farmland, the layout conjures images of the Scottish Highlands, nestled in the lowlands of Ontario. With deep pot bunkers, fescue mounds, grassy hollows and undulating lies, there’s no shortage of trouble if you stray from the fairways. When the winds swirl, the course gets even tougher. Majestic 400-year-old oak trees stand guard, evoking an old-world feel and adding natural beauty to this picturesque newcomer. At 448 yards from the tips, the 14th is by far the most demanding par four. Golfers are faced with a wide bunker staring them down off the tee; a perfect long iron is needed to reach a plateau green, which is surrounded by several perilous pot bunkers. With five sets of tees ranging from 5,000 to 7,000 yards, Piper’s Heath is sure to test neophytes and veterans alike. Piper’s Pub is worth a visit after following your round.
