Set amid 19 acres of woods and gardens in the historic town of St. Marys (just a 20-minute drive from Stratford), the Westover Inn is a popular choice for theatre-goers. Its most famous regular is Christopher Plummer, who’s been known to play the piano in the guest lounge before retiring to his favourite top-floor suite, which features a private entrance, a whirlpool tub and theatre paraphernalia. The gracious limestone manor houses five other spacious second-floor guest rooms, decorated in soothing shades of green, gold and burgundy. Bathrooms are small and simple. The real luxury is in the dining room, where the menu emphasizes local ingredients, including Perth County wild boar sausage, Shepherd Gourmet Dairy sheep’s milk cheese, and organic greens from Anthony John (the Food Network’s Manic Organic). The property was a seminary from the 1930s to ’70s; the 46-seat stone chapel, with its stained glass windows, is a favoured wedding venue. Tucked into the woods, cottage-style suites with patios are popular in summer. Serious walkers head for the Grand Trunk trail and its scenic vistas of the Thames River. Bikes are provided to guests free of charge.
