Canadian Voyageur Adventures blends history and ecotourism in two weekend canoe trips: one guides paddlers along the upper Ottawa River, near Pembroke, the other into the pine and maple forests of Algonquin Park. Your transport: a replica fur trader canoe. To round out the voyageur experience, guides don authentic period costume—moccasins, tuques, wool pants, linen shirts and ceintures fléchées (long sashes woven with colourful patterns)—and prepare food appropriate to the time, such as pea soup, tourtière and baked beans. On the Ottawa River, you’ll follow routes originally traversed by First Nations peoples, then by explorers and, finally, 17th- to 19th-century fur traders. Along the way, you’ll camp at many of the same sites that voyageurs used. The 500-foot Oiseau Rock, a two-kilometre return hike, offers a great view of the Ottawa Valley and a swim in a cool mountain lake. An Algonquin Park weekend begins with a Friday night rendezvous at a campground and continues Saturday morning with a four-hour paddle across Lake Opeongo to a wilderness camp.
