After you visit St. James’ Cemetery, walk over to the Necropolis and Crematorium. Its entrance gates are flanked by a funeral chapel and superintendent’s lodge, both spectacular examples of Victorian Gothic revival. The Necropolis itself first opened for business in 1850; along with Mount Pleasant Cemetery, the site allowed for bodies to be disinterred and moved from Potter’s Field, which had outgrown its six acres at Yonge and Bloor. Famous historical figures rest here, including William Lyon Mackenzie and George Brown, founder and one-time publisher of The Globe and Mail.
