They don’t build them like this anymore: 40-something rooms, quarters for servants, and a Doulton china sink with gold leaf—all on 20 spectacular acres of lakefront. Completed in 1835, Dundurn was home to Sir Allan Napier MacNab, railway magnate, land speculator, politician and sometime stage actor. Today, it’s been restored to the state it was in when MacNab was premier of United Canada, from 1854 to 1856. Knowledgeable costumed guides lead crowded hour-long tours of the sprawling mansion, built in the Italianate style. The grand dining room has recently been restored and hints at MacNab’s taste: the built-in sideboards feature ornamental Doric columns, their capitals housing hidden booze cabinets.
