This stone and brick building sets the standard for archival storage. Inside is a huge two-storey atrium where skylights illuminate exhibits about urban issues of the day; a soaring staircase leads to a recent acquisitions display. A window provides a view of the main storage centre: cardboard boxes with bar codes are stacked floor to ceiling high. There are more than one million photos dating from 1856, plus assessment rolls, maps and documents (some going back to 1792). A modest second-floor reference library provides bound city council proceedings, government reports and journals. Photographs and other archival materials can be viewed in the reading room.
