This replica of a pioneer town can be as kitschy as a theme park, but that’s part of its charm. From May through December, the town’s boardwalks and some 40 restored buildings teem with tourists. Guides play the roles of harness makers, tinsmiths, millers and cooks, demonstrating the chores and trades that composed pioneer life. Children look at farm animals, learn how to make a Victorian musical instrument, and discover how to write the old-fashioned way—with ink and quill. Start your self-guided tour at the group of five original log buildings from the early 1800s. Other highlights include a one-room schoolhouse and the Doctor’s House, where a guide dressed in period costume talks about old herbal remedies.
