A heady scent of varnish and lemon polish greets you as you push open the farmhouse door to Dayn Leyshon’s store. In the workshop next to the house, Leyshon painstakingly restores 19th-century pine Canadiana, hutches, sideboards and harvest tables. The drawers in a pine chest ($2,400) pull out smoothly—a key sign of good craftsmanship. Whenever he can, Leyshon provides the provenance of a piece. For instance, a workbench ($1,600), complete with its original wooden vises, was found in an old machine shop in the Grey-Bruce region. After decades’ worth of oil and grease were cleaned off and 200 nails removed, the maple bench now gleams with fresh varnish and would make a remarkable bar or kitchen island. As with most of the pieces Leyshon sells, it’s one of a kind.
