“I specialize in nothing, dabble in everything,” says owner Marty Van Vliet, whose four-room store is but 2,000 square feet. However, Van Vliet does appear to have a critical mass of costume jewellery amid the furnishings, rugs, china and silverware: a star-shaped rhinestone brooch, circa 1940, is $18; a gold and garnet ring from the 1920s is $150. He often carries odd pieces of china—partial sets of Aynsley and Limoges—for less than $20 per item. Room-size Persian carpets from the 1930s go for less than $1,000.
