The brainchild of Quebec theatre darling Evelyne de la Chenelière (Strawberries in January), this 2002 one-man show stars Raoul Bhaneja as the titular Algerian refugee, newly landed in Montreal, who is hired as a substitute teacher for a grade 6 class traumatized by the recent in-school suicide of his predecessor, Martine Lachance. Struggling to adapt to the unfamiliar surroundings, the gentle Bashir must find a way to ease his young students’ sorrow while working through a recent bereavement of his own. Jennifer Tarver directs. Previews from Oct. 28.—Stéphanie Verge
