The headliner on this West Coast double bill is one of a number of Vancouver acts making something fresh from classic rock tropes. Whereas Black Mountain draws inspiration from such early ’70s rockers as Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, Ladyhawk’s fuzzy, ragged songs recall the best of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and Dinosaur Jr. on Shots (2008)—the four-piece band’s second album for U.S. indie label Jagjaguwar (also home to Black Mountain)—singer-guitarists Duffy Driediger and Darcy Hancock yowl and yearn to very engaging effect. Immaculate Machine, their tourmate from Victoria, prefers a poppier, peppier approach. On its third full-length album, Fables (2007), the trio’s multi-part vocal harmonies and prominent use of keyboards lend an air of good cheer to even the most melancholy lyrics. Such was the case for “Jarhand,” a splendid single made with the assistance of The Cribs and Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos. “Your number’s coming up!” sings Immaculate Machine vocalist-keyboardist Kathryn Calder, in the song’s chorus. It’s hard to tell if that’s a good or bad thing, but we’ll stay optimistic.—Jason Anderson
