In 1997, an unknown and much less promiscuous Nelly Furtado performed at this all-female showcase, catching the eye of Philosopher Kings singer Gerald Eaton and current manager Chris Smith, who helped jump-start the pop star’s success. Other breakout alumni are Jully Black and former Canadian Idol contestants Toya Alexis, Martha Joy and Lisa Bell. Now in its 13th year, the Honey Jam stage continues to promote solid female talent with a lineup that includes R&B singers Trish and Tika Simone, rocker Sarah Melody and singing-songwriting duo Yuumei. The event is hosted by MuchMusic’s Sarah Taylor, with proceeds from ticket sales going to YWCA Toronto.—Mimi Szeto
