This young duo from Scarborough made a big impression with its incendiary set at The Silver Dollar Room during last year’s North by Northeast. The buzz for The Carps soon went international—over the past year, drummer-singer Jahmal Tonge and bassist Neil White have been busy touring Canada and Europe in support of their debut EP, The Young and Passionate Days of Carpedia (2007). With the groundswell of attention, it’s no surprise that this year the fest has given The Carps a juicy headlining spot at The Mod Club. The band will surely be stoked to deliver a generous serving of its hard rock action, which enhances the sound of much-missed Death From Above 1979 with the raw power of soul and R&B and, on “Gretta Edris,” some synth-pop flair.—Jason Anderson
