Cinematheque Ontario celebrates a prominent distributor of Japanese cinema, Kashiko Kawakita (1908–1993), with a summer-long series of Japanese classics. The 24-film package covers everything from the well known (Akira Kurosawa’s Rashômon and Stray Dog) to the worth knowing—the documentaries of Sumiko Haneda, including the 1982 flick Ode to Mt. Hyachine (a three-hour look at devotional dancing that became a hit in Japan) and the Toronto premiere of Into the Picture Scroll, the tale of a famous 16th- and 17th-century story scroll. July 4 to Aug. 18. Also featured: a celebration of Italian sex symbol Marcello Mastroianni that includes his collaborations with Michelangelo Antonioni (La Notte, July 9) and Federico Fellini (8 1/2, July 2); a short tribute to Alain Resnais, including showings of the iconic emblems of new wave artiness, Hiroshima Mon Amour (July 26) and Last Year at Marienbad (July 25); and an even shorter look at bad-boy director Jean Eustache (The Mother and the Whore), July 11 to 17. A long tribute to the silky smooth Luchino Visconti (Death in Venice) begins with such classics as Bellissima, but will really gather steam next month.—Brent Ledger
