There may not be a genre out there that melds more readily with jazz than the traditional music of India—the meeting of the two is certainly in evidence in this component of the World Routes series. Autorickshaw uses the improvisatory basis of Indian music as a platform for numerous Western styles, but here the group led by vocalist Suba Sankaran blends in another Indian genre as well, joining the Bollywood Brass Band to explore the music of Indian cinema. Aug. 8. American-born pianist Vijay Iyer may be the most gifted musician engaged in Indo-jazz fusion, exploring the rhythmic and melodic inheritance in numerous groups. Tirtha (“pilgrimage” in Sanskrit) is a trio comprising Iyer, guitar master Prasanna and tabla drummer Nitin Mitta (Aug. 9). —Stuart Broomer
