Inside Out

This year has Toronto’s Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival dreaming of down under. The country’s biggest friends-of-Dorothy film fest brings audiences oodles of Oz, including Dan Castle’s teen surfer drama, Newcastle; a sing-along screening of the drag extravaganza The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert; and the hit mockumentary Razzle Dazzle—solidly in the cheery camp tradition of Priscilla and Strictly Ballroom, Darren Ashton’s second flick cocks a tweezed brow at competitive kid dancers, stage mothers and hysterical instructors. The 250-film lineup also features a slew of documentaries on such gay icons as photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (Black White & Gray: A Portrait of Sam Wagstaff and Robert Mapplethorpe). Parties, panels and a symposium on international gay filmmaking round out the offerings.—Brent Ledger
