James Kudelka’s triumphant 2004 version of Cinderella brilliantly pairs Sergei Prokofiev’s rich and psychological music with clever storytelling, gilded by the magnificent art deco–inspired sets and costumes of David Boechler. May 28 to June 8. $20-$200. The National Ballet joins forces with Luminato and the Alberta Ballet in presenting the Toronto debut of The Fiddle and the Drum. Set to Joni Mitchell songs, the piece features Mitchell’s paintings and reflects her concerns about the environment and violence. The National also performs two popular works: Harald Lander’s Etudes, a journey through the history of classical ballet; and William Forsythe’s The Second Detail, a punk contemporary ballet. Five Brahms Waltzes in the Manner of Isadora Duncan, meanwhile, is a farewell solo by principal dancer Jennifer Fournier, marking the end of her 22-year career with the company. June 13 to 22. $20-$200. The annual Mad Hot II gala features a wonderful, surprising program of short works showcasing the National’s talented dancers. June 17. $50-$100.—Paula Citron
