The annual summer-long festival in Northumberland County enters its peak period, with weekend concerts, mid-week master classes, a Broadway at the Barn series, and a number of solo recitals and chamber music events.

Bennett, Manker & Laplante. Soprano Donna Bennett, cellist Brian Manker and pianist André Laplante combine forces for a recital of songs and a lecture about Schubert’s great Arpeggione Sonata in A Minor, D. 821. Its originally intended instrument is a rarely played kind of bowed guitar, and the work has become a staple of cellists’ repertoire. July 13. $10–$33.

Operetta in the Countryside. Strauss the Younger’s Die Fledermaus is the afternoon offering here, with Nancy Hermiston directing the UBC Opera Ensemble in a fully staged English production, and piano accompaniment by Richard Epp. Picnic lunches (from $12.50) are available by pre-order. July 3 to 6. $10–$33.

Saturday Night at the Opera. Alexa Petrenko of Classical 96.3 FM hosts a program that highlights some of opera’s best-loved arias, performed by four distinguished singers: soprano Monica Whicher, mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Turnbull, tenor Keith Klassen and veteran bass-baritone Gary Relyea. July 26. $15–$40.

Schubertiad. This gathering of chamber musicians, singers and soloists celebrating Schubert includes three informal segments that showcase some of the Viennese master’s greatest works. Sip a glass of wine or feast on a pre-ordered Austrian Abendbrot or Nachspeise while you enjoy featured pianists André Laplante, Angela Park and Brian Finley; singers Donna Bennett and Mark DuBois; Kingston-based composer John Burge; and musicians from the Toronto and Montreal symphony orchestras. July 12. $5–$40.

Tokai String Quartet. Violinists Amanda Goodburn and Csaba Koczo, violist Yosef Tamir-Smirnoff and cellist Rafael Hoekman hail, respectively, from South Africa, Hungary, Moscow and Newfoundland, but they all currently call Toronto home. The foursome made a name for itself at last year’s Banff International String Quartet Competition, taking fourth prize; here it presents a program of quartets by Haydn, Carl Czerny, Sir Ernest MacMillan and Debussy. July 19. $10–$33. —Rick MacMillan
