Over 250 painters, sculptors, photographers and multimedia artists are participating in this year’s edition of the annual juried art fair, which begins tonight with an opening night party. In addition to plenty of opportunites to score contemporary works from emerging artists, there are also talks on topics like art as an investment and docent-led tours of the show floor. $15–25. Ladysmith Black Mambazo
The all-male choral group from South Africa first exploded onto the world stage nearly 30 years ago when they all but upstaged Paul Simon on his 1986 record Graceland. They’re now touring to promote their latest album, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Friends, which includes collaborations with Dolly Parton, Sarah MacLachlan, Stevie Wonder and more. $19.50–$69.50. Hannah Moscovitch Double Bill
Hot off a successful run of her Afghanistan drama This is War, The Tarragon Theatre’s wunderkind playwright-in-residence presents a pair of compelling domestic dramas: Other People’s Children, which premieres in Toronto and examines the sometimes unsettling bond between a baby and her nanny, and Summerworks standout Little One, which looks at a boy’s inability to love his adopted sister. $48–$53. Ice Fest (FREE!)
The centrepiece at the eighth edition of the perennial family favourite is be an enchanted garden scene made out of 35,000 pounds of ice, complete with fairies, gnomes and oversized butterflies. The popular carving competition takes place at noon on Saturday, and there are demonstrations and skating performances throughout the weekend. February 23–24. Reel Artists Film Festival
Herb and Dorothy Vogel were an art world anomaly: an ordinary middle class couple that through foresight and good taste happened to become some of the most important collectors of contemporary art in the U.S. They’re the subject of Herb & Dorothy 50×50, the film that opens the tenth anniversary Reel Artists festival, which is devoted to documentaries about art, artists and the heady world that revolves around them. $12–$60.
