The Weekender: Buskerfest, Fake Prom and six other events on our to-do list
1. LIVE GREEN TORONTO FESTIVAL (FREE!)
As a locavore trend, backyard chicken coops are so three years ago; the latest—and more legal—urban agricultural feat is beekeeping. Not sure how, exactly, one goes about getting bees, much less keeping them? Learn how at this weekend’s environmentally friendly festival, where info on bees, local food and renewable energy are all on offer. August 28 and 29. Yonge-Dundas Square, livegreentoronto.ca.
2. FAKE PROM
The number one reason this annual dance party is better than our real prom? Legal drinking. (Flasks are overrated.) That being said, the wild west theme and crowning Fake Prom King and Queen are close seconds. August 27. $20. Palais Royale, 1601 Lake Shore Blvd. W., fakeprom.com.
3. REPO! AND ROCKY HORROR DOUBLE BILL
Bloor Cinema’s regular shadow cast (when actors give a live re-enactment of the movie while it plays behind them) is fun, but this “nerd-themed double bill” is even better. There’s going to be twice the cult movie goodness, twice the shadow cast talent and twice the opportunity to go all out on a movie-themed costume. August 27. One film $7, double bill $10. 4. DANCE IN MY BACKYARD!
Choreographer Eroca Nicols’ annual dance showcase has become an outlet for emerging female choreographers, but the original goal was to make contemporary dance more accessible and less stuffy. The solution: the performances are held in a small backyard across from Dufferin Grove Park. August 27 and 28. 5. UNDERWEAR AFFAIR
Focused on raising money for research on cancers that strike down there, this charity run-walk is a little sexier than most; participants are encouraged to dress up in costumes or, even better, underwear. 6. MCGILL VS. U OF T FOOTBALL GAME
We’re getting a little nostalgic. Summer’s winding down, those Staples back-to-school commercials are airing, and we find ourselves missing those halcyon days of pub nights, football games and “study sessions” with our crush. We’ll be easing the nostalgia with this game between the McGill Redmen and the U of T Blues. August 28. $10. Varsity Centre, 299 Bloor St. W., ticketbreak.com/event_details/3797.
7. BUSKERFEST
The world’s best jugglers, artists, mimes and fire eaters are in town for this annual festival of street performance. Our don’t-miss pick: Toronto’s very own Suspended Animation Circus. Aerial acrobats do their thing dangling from a gigantic helium balloon. August 26 to 29. St. Lawrence Market, 95 Front St. E., torontobuskerfest.com.
8. CITY AND COLOUR
Hipster faves turned mainstream success story City and Colour (a.k.a. Dallas Green, a.k.a. Mr. Leah Miller) headlines a mostly Canadian indie-folk-rock-pop show. Also on the bill are twin pop outfit Tegan and Sara, Halifax natives Wintersleep and Ra Ra Riot (the only Yankees on the lineup). August 28. $36.75–$63.75.
