The one thing you should see this week

This week’s pick: Peaches Christ Superstar

Is this the Preaches of Peaches? Featuring Judas Iscariot, Pontius Pilate, Mary Magdalene and the big J? Heads may tilt at the idea of Peaches, electro star and provocateur extraordinaire, putting on a one-woman production of Jesus Christ Superstar, but performing all the roles in an Andrew Lloyd Webber creation is hardly the most outrageous thing the former Torontonian has ever done. (That would be her album called Fatherfucker. Or that other one called Impeach My Bush. Or maybe her rock opera, Peaches Does Herself.) It’s quite the opposite, really.

A fan of the musical since her teenage years, Peaches plays it almost sweetly straight here, belting out the likes of “Gethsemane” and “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” while accompanied on the piano by long-time friend and fellow eccentric Chilly Gonzales. It hasn’t all been milk and honey, however. The show’s world premiere—which took place last March in Berlin, where both the musicians now live—was initially put on hold when Peaches couldn’t secure the rights. Webber’s collaborator, Tim Rice, caught wind of the situation and allowed her to go forward when he realized just how serious she was and—ta-da!—the project was, um, resurrected. And thank God for that.
