It’s been a killer autumn for cheese lovers. Earlier this week, news broke of a tentative deal with the EU that could see European cheeses flooding the Canadian marketplace. Now, we learn that the best cheese in the world is actually made just a few hours outside Toronto. The buttery, gouda-style Lankaaster from Ontario cheesemonger Margaret Peters won top prize at the cheese equivalent of the Oscars: the annual Global Cheese Awards in Somerset, England. The two-year-old Canadian starlet beat out hundreds of more established cheddars, Parmesans and other European heavyweights to be crowned—no joke—the Global Supreme Champion of cheese. As for what makes the Lankaaster so exceptional, Peters explains: “You eat a piece of it and you want to go in a closet alone and keep eating it.” Cheese fans itching to spend some alone time with the world’s best cheese can purchase a loaf from the Cheese Boutique in Swansea, or order one directly from Glengarry Fine Cheese in Lancaster, Ontario.
