Roncey gets a new boutique butcher and prepared food shop
Toronto has undergone a meat-centric renaissance of late, with dozens of new butcher-boutiques hocking steaks and chops alongside gourmet prepped food and artisanal pantry staples. Custodio’s Meats and Eats, which recently opened on the crowded Roncey strip, is the latest spot to pair ethically butchered meats with lovingly made comfort dishes like roasted chicken potpie and double-smoked mac and cheese. The store stocks 65 prepared meals in its oversized fridges, while a long counter case holds whole ducks and rabbits, thick-cut beef short ribs, heritage Tamworth rib chops and other premium cuts. The wood chip–strewn floor is both charming and practical—local farmers have been known to stop by with whole beasts strapped to their backs.

What a find! You can see the care and quality taken by Custudio’s as soon as you step inside the shop: great-looking meats and an attractive assortment of freshly prepared foods. We walked out with plump chicken wings that cooked up to juicy perfection; wonderful nutmeg-scented breakfast sausages; meaty oxtail; and thick, double-smoked bacon that I can’t wait to try tomorrow morning! Owner Jason Custudio is both knowledgeable and personable – what more could you ask of a great neighbourhood meat and food shop!
