At 9,000 square feet, the new McDonald’s outlet at 356 Yonge Street is the burger giant’s biggest franchise in Ontario—and definitely the flashiest. “We want it to be a very modern, urban, hip place where you can chill,” said franchise owner Lindsay Bridge, “not that whole fast food, plastic chairs concept.” Some of the funky new design details include cinderblock columns, colourful pop-art murals and built-in fireplaces. In a likely bid to woo nearby Ryerson and U of T students, the space also includes a standalone McCafé coffee shop and comfy lounge areas for studying—and, most importantly, lots and lots of plugs for laptops and smartphones.
