Cheap restaurants are a dying breed on Queen West near Trinity Bellwoods, but Nam may be the exception. It’s a Banh Mi Boys doppelganger (right down to the suspiciously similar signage), and it serves some of the area’s least expensive take-out. The menu includes Chinese buns, rice-paper rolls and yam fries, but the best deal may come in sandwich form: for $6, big house-baked baguettes come loaded with pickled veggies, fresh cilantro and hot sauce, plus a choice of protein (options include lemongrass chicken, pulled pork and coconut meatballs). Banh mi purists may miss the traditional slick of liver pâté (and the $3 price tag at some Chinatown shops), but otherwise it’s a pretty authentic Vietnamese sub, and a well-priced option for the neighbourhood. At tomorrow’s grand opening, customers will get a free drink with purchase of any sandwich or bun.
