The Hogtown Cure is a new straight-from-the-farm deli and sandwich shop which opened earlier this month at the corner of Dundas and Dufferin. Behind the store are husbands Steve Ireson and Chris Schroer, along with co-owner Vanessa Gulletson, who stripped back four previous renovations to reveal original plate glass windows and Victorian wallpaper, which they supplemented with an open-concept copper kitchen and light fixtures made from old canning jars. The counter is stocked with gourmet cold cuts, Canadian cheeses and house-made salads, as well as a daily grab-and-go sandwich ($5.99). Schroer, the chef, smokes various ingredients in-house for his sandwiches, like a classic pulled pork ($8.49) and a smoked tofu wrap ($7.99). Hogtown Cure also carries a range of artisanal products, like Kiln Haus cinnamon chocolate raisins (the first raisins made in Canada), and will be adding featured cuts of meat like pork chops and ham steaks soon. In the basement is a full production kitchen, and in the spring, Hogtown will offer a rotating selection of homemade TV-dinner style meals.
