Name: Bywoods
Neighbourhood: Humewood
Contact Info: 760 St. Clair Ave. W., 416-658-0460, facebook.com, @bywoods760
Owner: Tony Cappellano of Boom Hospitality Inc.
Chef: Craig Dehne, formerly the chef at The Paddock on Bathurst Street

The Food: The Cappellano family, owners of the Boom breakfast chain, are now serving dinner at Bywoods on St. Clair West. The refreshingly straightforward menu lists a mix of Mediterranean-inspired salads, pastas and mains (e.g. roasted chicken, grilled striploin), plus homemade flatbreads topped with things like sliced potatoes, rosemary and stracchino, a creamy Italian cow’s-milk cheese.

The Drinks: Beer, wine and a handful of $10 cocktails, including a bacon-flavoured Caesar and a few fruity patio sippers (yes, there’s a patio!).

The Place: Named after the St. Clair West strip’s most ubiquitous street-name suffix (Kenwood, Pinewood, Humewood, etc.), Bywood’s 88 seats are spread out over two dining rooms and a 24-seat patio. The aesthetic is homey but polished, with the usual smattering of reclaimed-wood accents and dangling bulbs. Old black-and-white photos of Toronto street signs add a touch of nostalgia.
