If you haven’t ventured north of Bloor in a while, take note: St. Clair West has arrived. In the last year or so, the strip between Avenue Road and Oakwood has turned into a stoller-pusher’s dream of cozy restaurants and gourmet food purveyors. The latest is Baker and Scone, a pretty lunch counter and bakery just down the street from haute butcher Roast. Owner Sandra Katsiou opened shop earlier this month and has since been swarmed by hungry locals. At lunchtime, she serves simple soups and salads, but the main draw is her encyclopedic menu of sweet and savoury scones. They come in an unbelievable 40 flavour combinations, with 10-or-so kinds available per day. Traditionalists will find their standard lemon-currant and cheddar-chive varieties, but there are also less conventional options, like chai-latte spice and orange-cardamom. Each scone comes with a pat of sweet Stirling butter—or, for a little extra, a side of house-made lemon curd.
