Love Nests

Get away from it all—and closer to each other

With Valentine’s Day on a Wednesday this year, it might be tough to schedule some alone time. Fortunately, many of the area’s country inns feature extended package offers, allowing lovebirds some romantic flexibility. Here, five of the hottest destinations within driving distance.

Langdon Hall Country House Hotel & Spa
This grand hotel, set in the rolling countryside near Cambridge, boasts both luxurious accommodation and exquisite dining, courtesy of chef Jonathan Gushue. Guests can choose from two packages: one-night’s accommodation, a special Valentine’s dinner menu and full country breakfast on either Saturday, February 10 or 17 ($525 per couple); or, at only $475 per couple, the same package on February 14 itself—with the added bonus of a performance by the George St. Kitts Jazz Band. Food lovers can skip the sleepover and indulge in the menu only—mains include choice of pan-roasted halibut, Angus beef tenderloin, lamb rib-eye or ricotta dumplings—for $70 to $90 per person.
Where: 1 Langdon Dr. (west of Blair Rd.), Cambridge, 519-740-2100, 1-800-268-1898.
Driving time: one hour.

The Millcroft Inn & Spa
With its spectacular spa, this is one of Ontario’s more indulgent escapes. To accommodate busy schedules, the inn offers two Valentine’s week getaway packages, one for a single night (available February 11 to 15), the other for two nights (February 9 to 18). Both packages offer a Valentine’s tasting menu in the main room—featuring seared sea scallops, port-poached beef tenderloin, and mascarpone and cherry empanadas—as well as a bottle of bubbly, breakfast the next morning and a $200 spa credit. One-night package starts at $337.50 per person; two nights from $238 per person, per night.
Where: 55 John St., Alton, 519-941-8111.
Driving time: one hour.

Inn on the Twenty
Located in Jordan, one of the prettiest villages in wine country, this serene 29-room inn lives up to its surroundings. This V-Day, the inn is offering a “Chocolate Fantasy”: after dining at the inn’s restaurant (featuring such extravagant entrées as char and foie gras, Lake Land Farms pheasant, and Quebec bison strip loin) guests return to their suites for a palette of chocolates and Cave Spring dessert wines. Weeknight packages start at $123 per person per night; weekend packages start at $169.
Where: 3845 Main St., Jordan, 905-562-5336.
Driving time: one and a half hours.

Little Inn of Bayfield
A coach stop on the Huron Trail in the 1830s, this yellow-brick inn is a favourite with foodies. It’s no surprise then that it offers, throughout February, a special Weekend Romance Gastronomie Package. The package features two nights’ accommodation, a Friday-night three-course á la carte dinner for two, and the dining room’s renowned Saturday night five-course Wine and Dine event, plus made-to-order breakfasts each morning. Prices range from $677 to $852 per couple, depending on choice of room. (Less expensive, less food-focused packages available.) Other V-Day indulgences—sparkling wine, truffles, massages—can be added.
Where: 26 Main St., Bayfield, 519-565-2611, 1-800-565-1832.
Driving time: two and a half hours.

Sam Jakes Inn
Located in scenic and historic Merrickville, on the banks of the Rideau Canal, the Sam Jakes claims to love Valentine’s Day so much that they’re celebrating an entire Valentine’s Week. From February 9 to 17, the inn offers a special rate of $132 per person, which includes sparkling wine, an all-chocolate dinner menu (featuring such mains as scallops seared in cocoa butter and pork tenderloin rubbed with cocoa bean) and breakfast. Price is based on double occupancy for a regular room; upgrades available.
