Bar Crawl: Boa

The newest incarnation of Boa By Karen Steward

Since the late ‘90s, Boa has been playing musical chairs all over the nightclub scene. On swank Bellair, it was one of the city’s first DJ bars—open till 6 a.m. five nights a week. In 2003, in the skeleton of a former Chinatown porn theatre, it reopened as Boa-Redux, a popular progressive after-hours house. Sustaining the high-profile weekend DJ lineup and army-capped, sneaker-sporting crowd from there (sprinkled with a few fun-fur holdouts from the ‘90s), it recently moved again, to the heart of clubland. Although the larger digs (twice the size; capacity 1,800) increase the risk of tourist infestation, Boa boasts a full licence, previously lacking, with Red Bull (still the mixer of choice) to sustain the euphoric crowd through to Sunday morning.

Tip: Beware sensitive ears—the notorious Dynacord sound system (120 decibels of eardrum-popping, bone-rattling beats) has been installed throughout the sprawling two floors.
