TIFF Red Carpet: Enemy

While Jake Gyllenhaal’s friendship with Hugh Jackman has received a lot of attention this TIFF, there’s also a budding bromance between Gyllenhaal and Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, who have two films together at this year’s fest. The pair, along with Blue Velvet icon Isabella Rossellini, hit the red carpet together again yesterday for Enemy, a Toronto-set psychodrama about a man investigating his doppelganger.

Outside the Ryerson Theatre, Villeneuve joked that he cast Gyllenhaal for both of his English-language debuts because, “Unfortunately, I’m deeply inspired by him, he’s a fantastic actor.” Why unfortunately? “Look at him,” the director deadpanned. “He’s an unbearable human being, it’s tough to be around him.” Villeneuve’s right. The 32-year-old Gyllenhaal looked like the cool high school kid who rides his motorcycle to prom: scruffy cheeks, hair slicked back and a three-piece cord suit.
