Shows of spousal support seem to be a theme for TIFF 2012. First, John Krasinski accompanied Emily Blunt to a string of opening night Looper events. Then, last night, Jennifer Garner showed up as Ben Affleck’s plus-one on the Argo red carpet at Roy Thompson Hall (wearing a black Valentino dress and a generous serving of Van Cleef and Arpels diamond jewellery). Though Affleck’s film tells the tense tale of the “Canadian Caper” that allowed six American diplomats to evade capture following the Iranian revolution, the mood at the premiere was light. Actor Tate Donovan joked about his ensemble, admitting, “I bought these shoes in the ’90s,” while reporters had a tough time getting a straight answer out of funnyman John Goodman. Alan Arkin, Ontario boy Victor Garber and Bryan Cranston also strolled the carpet—the latter earning screams of “Mr. White!” from a contingent of Breaking Bad fans. Most stargazers, though, were there to see Affleck, who hugged some supporters, took photos with others and even bestowed a kiss on one woman. We hope Garner didn’t notice.
