Memphis, the Tony award–winning musical, is coming to Toronto for a very limited engagement

A new season of Glee has started, but for those who prefer getting up off the couch and experiencing song and dance live, the Tony award–winning musical Memphis hits the stage at the Toronto Centre for the Arts in Toronto on December 6. With music by Bon Jovis David Bryan, lyrics from Bryan and Joe DiPietro, direction from Tony nominee Christopher Ashley and choreography from Sergio Trujillo, it seems the show is destined to make the late Memphis creator George W. George proud (it has won four Tonys, after all).

Memphis is a story about a white 1950s DJ who falls in love with rock ’n’ roll music and with a talented black singer—it tells the tale of cultural and social revolution, which is always more fun with big 1950s dance numbers that get us out of our seats to bust a move (we promise this is something audiences do at performances that aren’t Mamma Mia). Tickets go on sale October 1 at 10 a.m., but get them fast: Memphis only runs until December 24, and we think it would make a perfect holiday gift for a theatre buff. As DanCap Productions president and Memphis producer Aubrey Dan said in a statement, “I have always believed that love is the great equalizer, and at the heart of Memphis, amidst all the spectacular singing and dancing, is the universal story that love conquers all.” Ah, bless.
