The Blue Jays’ bench coach has phenomenal handwriting
Apparently, Toronto Blue Jays bench coach Don Wakamatsu spends a half-hour on game day writing out the starting lineup in Gothic script (in Blue Jays–blue ink, natch). “Calligraphy may have no bearing on winning a game,” he told the Globe and Mail. “But it’s about paying attention to detail, about taking time to get things right, about making sure you do everything you have to do.” He was in part inspired by Milwaukee Brewers bench coach Jerry Narron, who also produced gallery-worthy lineup cards, and even inscribed the names of Japanese players in their own script. After the games, Wakamatsu’s cards are given to rookies after their debut or opponents. The remainder are sold at auction—clearly, we’re not the only Blue Jays fans dying to have one.
