Toronto’s private garbage collection has a mediocre few months
—Total number of curbside collection complaints lodged between January and March against Green for Life, the private contractor that handles garbage pickup in the western half of the city, according to a recent report. By comparison, the unionized city workers who collect garbage east of Yonge Street racked up only 2,844 complaints. (Both numbers are within what the city considers to be acceptable limits.) This is the latest in a run of bad news for GFL. Earlier this month, the company lost its Etobicoke contract because of a black mark on its driving record.
I have to wonder how many of these complaints are from other union members or former unionized garbage collectors. I have only compliments for my collectors and one of the most noticeable differences is the lack of split, fallen putrid garbage that use to follow the old trucks and their collectors. My garbage was collected, but I didn’t need a smelly reminder, especially during the summer months.
You had a story a month ago about how the private collection was working. Then the Star, and the Grid all came to counter your story.
If both numbers are in the city acceptable limits then this is a non story.
I feel their are people in the City that want the private collection to fail and those that want it to succeed, but their desire for success or failure is based on their political leanings and not on which provides a better services the community.
It is becoming more difficult to separate what is news and what is editorial comment in the Toronto media.
