Transit City is so terrible it ruined Toronto without even existing (or so says Rob Ford)
City councillors began the unpleasant process of debating service cuts yesterday, and the proceedings became nasty quite quickly. There was plenty of bickering between council’s left- and right-wing factions, talk of de-amalgamation and unofficial polls from the mayor’s office. At one point, the Toronto Sun reports, Councillor Anthony Perruzza asked if the costs of cancelling Transit City were included in the looming budget shortfall (they weren’t). Rob Ford’s response? “Transit City ruined this city.” To that, we say: um, how? We find it truly impressive that something that never actually existed could’ve done so much damage. I wished that Ford would actually go out and talk to citizens about what they want, instead of canceling and cutting with an approach that seems illogical, whimsical and emotional. And I am more than a taxpayer, I am a citizen of Toronto who wants to be treated respectfully. I am willing to pay more tax if I know that it will be used towards things that are important to me and to the city. I don’t like this blanket approach of needing to slash budgets because we are in debt. I want a realistic plan and good leadership for the future. Short term cuts are not going to be the solution for long term problems.
If Rob Ford ever reads this, I want him to know something:
You can’t say that you’re going to improve transit when you don’t use it yourself.
You can’t say that you’re going to build subways when you clearly have no money to fund such an endeavour.
You can’t say that Transit City “ruined Toronto”, when your dictatorial run as mayor has done so.
You can’t say you have respect for taxpayers when you’re the one who’s crapping on them.
Grow up, admit that you were wrong, and do the right thing by going back to Transit City before you lose everything!
Actually have an ounce of pride for Toronto for once and lets build a beautiful city.
