Rob Ford broke a few election rules because he loves democracy, says, uh, Rob Ford

Sure, Rob Ford broke the rules when he invited potential council candidates to give the mayor’s office a ring, but it’s only because he loves democracy so darn much. After Josh Matlow chided him for using his (taxpayer-subsidized) office for political gain, Ford called Matlow to apologize and issued a statement to clear the matter up. Ford says he encourages people of “all political stripes” to get involved in local democracy, and that he actually meant to give his “direct personal line” on the radio, not his office number (we imagine he’d get a fair number of prank calls if he actually did that). Case closed—almost. Councillor James Pasternak pointed out that campaigning isn’t supposed to begin until January 2014, so Ford messed up, whether or not he forgot his own phone number.
