Justin Trudeau has never been Donald Trump’s biggest fan. Of course, the prime minister has promised to work together with Barack Obama’s successor, and while he’s never outright condemned the Donald, it’s not hard to read between the lines of some of his statements. “I stand firmly against the politics of division, the politics of fear, the politics of intolerance or hateful rhetoric,” Trudeau told Maclean’s. He also said his record as a feminist speaks for itself when asked about Trump’s sexist comments.

Trump’s upset victory may not have been the outcome the PMO expected, but Trudeau nonetheless issued a statement congratulating the president-elect, rehashing his vow to cooperate and praising the two countries’ unique relationship. Here is the full text:

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Donald J. Trump on his election as the next President of the United States.
Canada has no closer friend, partner, and ally than the United States. We look forward to working very closely with President-elect Trump, his administration, and with the United States Congress in the years ahead, including on issues such as trade, investment, and international peace and security.
The relationship between our two countries serves as a model for the world.  Our shared values, deep cultural ties, and strong integrated economies will continue to provide the basis for advancing our strong and prosperous partnership.
