Doug Ford gains on John Tory in the latest mayoral poll

A poll released earlier today by political consultancy Mainstreet Technologies doesn’t give John Tory quite as much breathing room as last week’s Ipsos survey, but the essential message is the same: Tory is still the frontrunner, and Olivia Chow supporters are still getting harder to find. Mainstreet’s robocall canvass of 2,409 Torontonians found that Tory’s support is especially strong among people 45 and older. Also potentially good for Tory: the people who told Mainstreet that they support him also tended to express certainty that they would actually cast a ballot on election day. Supporters of Chow and Doug Ford, meanwhile, were less sure they’d turn out to vote.
I don’t understand the recent media infatuation with Mainstreet Technologies, and I didn’t understand it a couple of weeks ago, when it showed a stronger Tory reading. I could find out very little about their polling branch, or reviews on their record.
I will wait until the more established Forum and Ipsos polls are released.
what is the margin of error on this particular poll? That should be clearly stated on any ‘news’ report regarding polls/stats.
The poll has a margin of error of +/- 1.99% (yes I know – 2 decimals is ridiculous). More importantly, Mainstreet originally had Tory in a much wider lead. This is bad news for Tory, exceptionally bad news for Chow and, like it or not, excellent news for Doug Ford. Keep in mind that Ford has hardly done any campaigning to date, and typically some respondents will never admit to voting Ford.
Based on this, Chow will be under intense pressure to either break through or bow out and Tory will have to watch his every move as a mistake by him could cost him the election. Ford will be free to pursue his chosen strategy, knowing that he has a 30% base buffer!
While any one poll does not make an election, this is an indicator that people may be underestimating Doug Ford’s prospects and equating him to Rob, while overestimating Tory’s abilities!
seems more to me like they just want to feed the idea of a horse race that the media loves so much.
They only called people with a landline. Amazing how much older and more conservative the people get when you only call people with a landline.
The City go to function quite well without the Ford circus, but there is a core of supporters that want it back. Remember with the looming trial, the unfounded claims that the Ford brothers make. The Circus will return, and the tax payers always pay for in discission and caos. Time to pack up the tents and go back to Chiciago to your tag business. I am embarrassed and I don’t live in Toronto.
Do voters really think that the Ford Brothers saved them money ? They are only 2 votes out of the whole city council. Some politicians will say and do anything to keep their gravy-train job ( read: Fords ). And others have a sincere desire to make Toronto a better place to work and live. Someone has got to invent a Bologna Meter for these debates, that sends a shrill alarm when the Bologna gets thick. Apparently Millionaire Brothers can say ” I’m a regular guy like you” and their supporters believe it.
A VOTE FOR JOHN TORY IS A VOTE FOR EMPTY PROMISES THAT WILL AMOUNT TO NOTHING OTHER THAN HUGE TAX HIKES.THIS MAN CALLS HIMSELF A CONSERVATIVE YET HE HAS NOT SAT IN THE MAYORS CHAIR AND HE IS KISSING MCWYNNTYS ASS. HE IS A WOLF IN SHEEPS CLOTHING AND I DO HOPE THE TAXPAYERS WAKE UP AND REALIZE THIS BEFORE IT IS TO LATE. SMART TRACK BE DAMMED, SMART ASS IS BETTER SUITED FOR THIS ONE.
