In an earlier, simpler time, puppies wearing cute outfits were enough to attract attention all by themselves. But with pet adulation growing ever more outlandish, the bar has now been raised to include feathered mohawks and bejewelled eyebrows—as evidenced by the parade of decorated doggies headlining the third annual Paws for the Cause fundraiser to benefit the Central Toronto Veterinary Referral Clinic’s Cares Foundation. The crowd, encouraged by free-flowing drinks, hollered for the primped pups, and for photographer Theron Humphrey and his coonhound Maddie (whose willingness to be photographed in all kinds of scenarios has made the pair Internet famous).

The first sign that this wasn’t your average catwalk: Host Melissa Grelo from CP24 was interrupted during her opening remarks by barking from backstage (the pups also did less posing—and drank less champagne—than your average fashion models). A punked-out chihuahua-Yorkshire terrier mix earned the most “awww”s, though a charmingly befuddled King Charles spanielwas a close second. And, for those who are worried, the colour and materials used were all non-toxic, which means Fido’s health was safe—even if his pride was not.
