Toronto Police give lamest excuse ever: G20 charges lost in mail
The grand saga of the G20 cluster bomb that hit the city last month is interesting enough, but we’ve found that the most telling aspects are in the details: fake lake, Officer Bubbles, and the fence rule that turned out not to exist. A few weeks ago, the one and only charge laid in connection with that fence rule seemed to have disappeared when Dave Vasey showed up for his day in court, prompting much WTFing from his lawyer. Well, the police looked into it, and we can all rest our heads because nothing nefarious was involved. According to the Star, the charges were lost in the mail.
Police have now concluded that paperwork for Vasey’s charge was “delayed in the mail” and failed to arrive at the provincial prosecutor’s office until July 29 — one day after Vasey’s scheduled court appearance.
Toronto police spokesperson Meaghan Gray said it is unclear what might have caused the delay.
“What happened in the time it left us to the time it arrived in the prosecutor’s office is a detail we may never know,” she said.
Accidents do happen and all, but really? The media was pretty tightly focused on this charge, yet the cops appear to be using the same excuses we use on annoying family members whose weddings we don’t want to attend.
Vasey, it seems, is more or less off the hook. While police could still re-charge him (and maybe courier the paperwork this time?), Gray says the cops “don’t believe it’s in the public’s interest” to bring him back to the jailhouse.
Next up, soap bubbles taken off hazardous materials list.
And the farmer took another load away. Alright everybody sing along !!!!
The Toronto police and Chief Blair have a lot of explaining to do … about $45 millions worth at last count.
It seems pretty clear that they really didn’t want to be in court on this one, and I’m sure that paperwork got lost the same way the “dog ate my homework” back in grade school.
Toronto mayoralty candidates need to take a hard look at policing. It is a huge budget item and it provides little value. Cut the police budget in half and put the money elsewhere; like reducing the deficit.
Great piece Mr. Mcgrath, I really enjoyed the John Tory piece as well lol. I’m just starting my Journalism program and I’ll continue to read you column, thanks again.
Aw man I was looking forward to the public stoning can we still go ahead with the lapidation and do the court case later.
and the band played “Believe It”.
sounds like the cops are smoking too much of the stuff in the property room.
Be realistic though folks. At least they didn’t kill somone this time as is there want theses days.A guy in BC just got killed in his own home. He was unarmed.
The Royal Canadian Murdering Police got him.
Hmm arrived a day late. Or was it to just sweep this under the carpet because the police know they have no case. And I am sure they do not want more publicty by the case going to court.
Why is the opposition not screaming about that the cost of G-20, at $1.2 B, was by som $220 M more then the cost of Winter Olympics in Vancouver? (on the top of that, consider the revenues and prestige, +/-, accrued from Olympics and G-20 to both cities).
I guess Mr. Harper has his own law and odour dog and pony show. P.E.T. said it better “fuddle duddle”
Dear Mr. Harper………….fuddle-duddle!
Mr Panenka your math is off. The olympics cost several billion dollars and BC will pay for it for 40 or 50 years, just like Montreal did.
at 100G’s a year per cop the budget definitely needs to be retooled in a hurry….cops are laughing at everybody on youtube and blueline forums calling every protester unemployed bums…this is unbecoming behaviour in addition to all the other great accomplishments of the ISU…..kudos for protecting the white collar criminals banksters…..public unions can tend to emulate their failed politicos….at least rob ford is calling for halving the number of city councillors (now that there is only one city for the last 10-15 years???). the whole lot is laughable….all the way to bankruptcy and total collapse – just like the romans.
