EARTHQUAKE! Toronto media takes collective sigh of relief as they briefly get to stop reporting on the G20
Many people are reporting via Twitter that yes, indeed, there was an earthquake in Toronto about five minutes ago. CityNews had this to say: “That was just an earthquake in Toronto. More info to come,” while the Post tweeted that the tremor could be felt as far away as Ottawa. Torontoist has a similar report, and the Globe is reporting tremor testimonials from as far away as Ohio and Montreal.
The whole thing must be very exciting for media types, who get to think about something other than the G20 for 10 minutes.
UPDATE: The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.0 and was centred 50km northeast of Ottawa.
We certainly felt it it here in the Airport District….the earth definitely moved.

I didn’t feel it, but my mother said her desk and everything on it starting shaking around then the building she works in was evacuated along with many others in the downtown toronto core, apparently it was a pretty big one for the people downtown, guys at my work said some of them felt it and some didn’t but we are further north of the downtown core.
Condo building is 54 floors and I’m on the 31st and I could feel the building shake like crazy – felt like I was on a boat – Yonge & Eglinton.

Didn’t feel anything here in Oakville. My Dog didn’t even notice it.
I love how you say it could be felt as far away as Ottawa. Like the earthquake OBVIOUSLY started in Toronto. Turns out the epicentre was in Quebec, about 60 kms north of Ottawa. So I guess it could be felt as far away as Toronto!
I didnt feel anything, and I live in ingersoll
Just got fired for the mess I left in the washroom.
Felt it in Burlington Ontario, by lake Ontario.
Sitting at my chair at work in Richmond Hill and the chair was definitely shaking. The doors were moving and looking outside there really was not any wind to speak of. Never felt an earthquake before …
I felt it in Thornhill. Thought it was just some construction, or a train passing by, but what I surprise I got!
We felt it here in downtown Toronto. Our house wobbled a bit. Haven’t felt an earthquake here since 1998.
Thought neighbours next door were jumping around playing with a Wii at first, but when my son said he felt it in our basement, thought ‘yep – we are experiencing a tremor’.
5.5 on the scale – epicenter at Ontario and Quebec borders.
I felt it here in Lindsay, ON. My sister is in Quebec City, and apparently it was a 6.5, she texted me saying that they’re evacuating buildings.
Rare in Canada; 2nd in my life and I am 54.
On the joking part…. somebody wrote it was at the border of Quebec and Ontario…. and tomorrow is Quebec National Day, occasion for patriot and separatist to express their opinion on Quebec becoming a nation, independant and separated from Canada.
May be it is the first sign that finally Quebec is starting the separation process from the rest of Canada; physically first and politically after ! lol.
I am a born Montrealer and Quebecer; hope you all see this as a joke.
Toronto (Ontario) is on a fault line shared with Quebec and this fault line runs under the continental shelf (ocean) to California. It is one of 2 huge faults in California. The last time I recall an earthquake in Toronto was in 1989 – it shook area near Etobicoke and it blew out windows in Quebec City and shook downtown Montreal – the tremor originatd as far as I recall from California – as usual.
It was CLEARLY felt in Oakville, ON.
In London, didn’t feel a thing.
took my shed down
Who knows if the SUBWAYS will run downtown due to this today? We felt it at Yonge and Eglinton. All buildings around us and our, were evacuated. Cubicles were swaying…
last quake in Toronto was in 1998…it was a 5.4
I was at work just about to start my lunch all the sudden I saw the blind shaking, thinking it might be the the A/C that causing the blind to move. I got closer to the window and lean again the counter top then I felt it shaking thought may be it’s the train I just stand there for a few seconds. Then I sat down having my lunch.
After my lunch I went to the other department then I was told it was a tremor of magnitude 5.5
Anyway luckily it was not a bad one otherwise don’t know what could have happen.
We felt it in the downtown core (Yonge and King). We are on the 17th floor….the doors and windows were rattling. It was real scary.
You are right ! I couldn’t remember the year but yesss… in 1989 it took down a church Bell Tower and damaged City Hall in Montreal East Quebec; we couldn’t get out the stairways were moving and we stayed in our apartment on 2nd storey.
What amazed me the most was the noise that came just before it; like a train … it was very scary and the kids still remembver it.
I was in bed(working nights this week)and it actually woke me from a deep sleep!!I thought I was dreaming and it was a tornado lifting the house up and away….
Definitely felt it here by Pearson.
Felt in in Hamilton (McMaster University). The whole building (Keyes) was shaking.
We also felt it in Scarborough. 11th floor…building shook for a total of about 30 seconds. We could see all of the cars pulling over to the side of the road when we looked out the windows.
There was definately an earthquake, i live in Mississauga and i felt and saw the movement in the house.
Felt at work in Kitchener area. Felt like a huge truck rumbling by.
We were sleeping and suddenly my bed starts shaking and i was like what is this, then my mom was like it’s earthquake and suddenly the whole building start shaking, it was really scary.
My first time seeing an Earth Quake in Toronto, I believe.

Ya. Felt the quake from Toronto, Ontario. My curtains, bed, everything was shaking
I live in north london,

I thought it was my sister bouncing on the wall or something, lol! I’ve been hearing rumours that Quebec is seperating from Canada by the earthquake’s force, is this true!?
We felt it here in Welland, ON. At my computer, my chair gently rocked from N.E. to S.W. for about 30 seconds. At first I thought I was dizzy, but then I looked at my swimsuit hanging on the doorknob, as it continued swaying for about a minute. Our daughter was in her bedroom upstairs, where decorative glass bottles klinked together on her shelves. She came down and at the same time we said, “It’s an earthquake.”

…sorry my internet hung during the first attempt. Guess it was already sent.
Im in HAMILTON and I totally felt my whole house shake. At first I thought it was just a big truck driving by, but the shaking went on too long for it to just be a truck. Where can we check to see what it was on the scale?? I bet it was probably one a 1.2 or something like that…. and it’s probably caused by the BP oil crisis. They are sucking up all the oil from deep down inside the earth and now there are empty pockets so the weight of everything on top of it has to give in… this dam oil crisis is responsible for everything!
Very scary. I felt it even more because I am in an apartment building 17th floor. I ran out with my pets. What’s amazing to observe is how important social media has been throughout this occurrence. Here’s is an article about it. http://prmeasure.wordpress.com/2010/06/23/315/
Everything started slowly to shake, and then it got really strong, like a train going through; I thought i twas the GO train looking at the window I could not see any train. And then it slowed down and stopped. But my kids called so worried.
markham east of steeeles. felt it. Felt Funny. But Funny in a good way. A nice funny good way.
I was sitting on the couch watching the U.S. world cup game and thought that I was having a dizzy spell when I noticed that the water in my glass was rocking.
I thought it would be safer to run out side in case my house came down that was crazy and exciting!
Felt it here in school while writing an exam
IN SCARBOROUGH TO
Felt it in downtown TO at Dupont and Christie having lunch. Thought it was World Cup noise or truck rumbling, then thought it was the subway, like a true Torontonian! It lasted for quite a while, people on higher floors got more swaying and freakiness.
I was siiting at my office desk and I noticed my pen/pencil cannister, desk and swivel chair swaying….. it only lasted 8-11 secs, but still freaked me right out!!!!!
I’m in car sales and was selling a car to a local customer. Just as the deal was being made the whole building started to sway and kind of shudder. Must have been one heck of a good deal to cause that. :)
Forgot to add..this was in Barrie Ontario. Oops…
People crying about Toronto yet? WAHHHHH
Man, that was a wake up call for me cause I was sleeping, and I felt my bed shaking. I thought to myself, ‘Is my alarm clock this powerful?’. i ran of course, out of the house, and joined my many neighbors in Scarborough. It’s funny to see for that one moment things like the G20 summit, FIFA, and everything else, seemed obsolete, for hundreds of people.
Omg, I can/t believe for it !.
It is very scary.
My computer ‘woke up’ from its nape and that’s all I know of the quake. I also work at Yonge and Eglinton.
it was just chuck norris putting his foot down :)
I didn’t feel a thing in Burlington ON but my friend did at 2nd recess [IM 9]
Out here in Ajax and didn’t feel a thing.
I was in Markham with my son at the Nose surgeon’s appointment and he was telling me that, the government just approved my son’s nose surgery, because he can’t breath properly and that his surgery would be for next april 2012,
:( BUT IF I PAY HIM 6,000 DOLLARS to also fix his nose he can do his surgery in less that 4 weeks……..what a MONSTER!!then I tell him………..Doctor…wait a minute the floor is moving!!! HE didn’t say a word and looked at me as if I was crazy….God Bless these Doctors in Toronto, MONSTERS IS WHAT WE HAVE IN TORONTO :(
