Russell Oliver—a.k.a. the “Cashman”—really will give you cash (lots of it) for your gold

Today, the Toronto Star took a break from making us terrified of swimming pools to investigate the city’s notoriously competitive cash-for-gold industry. Armed with $1,500 in old gold, a Star reporter visited various cash-for-gold shops and, true to the cutthroat nature of the business, the offers fluctuated wildly—some were as low as $500, while others were as high as $1,600. One of the top offers came from none other than the “Cashman” himself, Russell Oliver, whose outlandish television commercials have long been the stuff of Toronto folklore. Apparently Oliver is willing to pay five to 10 per cent above the price of gold in order to a seal a deal and land a new customer.
