This is what the National Post’s website looked like as of Monday afternoon. BlackBerry is an official team sponsor, so we suppose a little brand synergy is to be expected, but there’s something about the phrasing here that reads less like a shot in the arm and more like a cry for help. If ever Apple starts telling people to buy iPhones because they’re American, it might be a good idea to start shorting Apple stock.
BlackBerry is a Canadian company. BlackBerry is a sponsor of the Raptors and has been for a long time. The Raptors launched an incredible marketing campaign to become Canada’s team. BlackBerry, even in such tough times for them, supports all of Toronto’s sports teams and has done great things for many Canadian cities, let alone what they have done for Waterloo and the tech industry. You taking a shot at BlackBerry shows Canada’s greatest threat – ourselves. No one in the world is more willing to attack anything Canadian than Canadians are and it makes me absolutely sick. How dare they show their national pride!
PS Apple doesn’t need promote their Americanness because the USA has inherent pride in everything that they do, good or bad. Remember it was only 15 years ago that Apple was the laughing stock of the tech world.
Apple’s big market is America. It is their only real market. Owning an iPhone is uncool now. Blackberry needs to support the markets that they are strong in first – then expand. They will be okay.
Seriously, what is wrong with a company that spends tons of money sponsoring a team to have an ad like this. Get over yourselves Toronto Star. What a useless way to waste people’s time.
