Finger wagging, browbeating, accusation, innuendo, disdain: Just another day at the Livent trial

Posted on June 19, 2008 by Douglas Bell

As expected, Eddie Greenspan was in full flight today as he launched his cross-examination of former Livent CFO Maria Messina. He started by telling his prey that they would be spending quite a while together and advised her to confine herself to the specific questions he was asking. This led to 90 minutes of finger wagging, browbeating, accusation, innuendo and outright disdain. He characterized her consulting for a downtown Toronto law firm—one charged with representing the interests of Livent against their former executives Drabinsky and Gottlieb—as the “Stikeman Elliott witness protection program.” Furthermore, Eddie “accused” her of “taking three million bucks to prepare testimony in an effort to convict Garth Drabinsky and Myron Gottlieb.” It was all jolly innuendo accompanied by the usual apt and brash theatrics. What does it all amount to? Stay tuned.

Looks like Garth and Myron are heading for the same fate as Conrad.

When will they ever learn?

" Looks like Garth and Myron are heading for the same fate as Conrad. "

Yup. Because these losers think they're smarter than everyone else and like mobsters, hire whom they think are the best lawyers - now THAT'S a laugh when referring to Greenspan....lol.

Are lawyers in Canadian courts really allowed to be as abusive as seems to be the case here? Greenspan seems really pathetic. Can he be locked away with Garth and Myron?

Eddie Greenspan '68 Confident Conrad Black will Win in Court

LAWYER EDDIE GREENSPAN HAS SOMETHING TO TELL THE MEDIA AND THE PUBLIC. HIS CLIENT, CONRAD BLACK, IS GOING TO WIN

It may be early into the new year but Lawyer Eddie Greenspan is seeing red -- and lots of Black.

"This is a complete and total witch hunt," he said.

Strong words from Greenspan who is tired of his client Conrad Black being coloured so badly in the press. And if the famed defence counsel has one resolution for 2006 it's for Black to get a fair shake.

"I have never seen such hate and animosity," Greenspan said in an interview.

He has represented some big names in more than 35 years of law -- including Garth Drabinsky, Gerald Regan and Robert Latimer -- but said he has never witnessed anything like the fury that goes with defending Lord Conrad Black, who has been charged in the United States with racketeering and fraud.

"He can't get a fair shake from a single writer," said the 61-year-old, who attended Osgoode Hall with Black in 1968.

He holds up a copy of the year-end Maclean's magazine.

"There are about 60 pictures on the cover and everybody is smiling -- even Saddam Hussein. But here's a mean-looking picture of Conrad. This is Maclean's magazine. His wife, Barbara Amiel, writes for it and his former editor at the National Post, Ken White, publishes it."

MEDIA CRUSH

It is, he says, a media frenzy. But Black, he said, will have the last laugh when he is acquitted in 2007 in a Chicago courtroom. "Just because the media doesn't want to hear what we have got to say doesn't mean we haven't got a defence," said Greenspan. "I am not going to trial to be laughed at. I am going to trial to win."
