Thanks for the forum and info-sharing on the Black trial. Black and Radler have been a blight on the Canadian business scene, and I was afraid that Black was going to wriggle out of being held to account yet once again. This blog and ite predecessor kept me up to date on how he didn't.

Terrific job blogmeister, and so unlike journalists e.g. M. Wente whose expertise seems limited to having an opinion, and not much else.

Fond memories of contributors to the blog, particularly the voice of reason and righteousness, Fintan, the erudite Roger, BBC, dr. , etc. and writing from the ruins of Mordor, the inimitable Lit200, the experience was very educational, fun, and at times even inspiring.

What can one say about Black other than hopefully we won't see his ugly mug in these parts ever again, though who in human history has ever had such luck.

re Black, one has to admit he is unique in one respect -- he was able to lose his appeal when he didn't have any to start with.

One final, last but important ( to me anyway ) remark about the always patient, thoughtful, kind and very decent Matthew Fox. I am aware that some on this blog emailed him incessantly with regard to Leaf and he always took the time to respond and to respond politely and very respectfully. His job no doubt was a difficult one but his attempts to " punish " by deleting / removing disgraceful comments by Leaf and others ( Cory Privatera - Leaf in disguise? for example ) were always appreciated.
Bell is so right about the relative openess of the US court system, the congeniality amongst the triers of justice aka prosecutorial staff, the greatness of Patrick Fitzgerald, Julie Ruder, Jeffrey Cramer, Eric Sussman, Edward Siskel ( nephew of the late great Gene ) - the heroes of the Black saga and the class they displayed when insulted so horribly by Black by him referring to these good and decent individuals as " Nazis ". This one comment / accusation by Conrad Black will never be forgotten, at least by me, and I hope that one day this arrogant disgraceful failure of a man apologizes and PUBLICLY.
I am proud to be an American and proud of the way my countrymen did their job to convict Conrad Black and finally get his a$$ behind bars where it should have been years ago.

All's well that ends well! His Lardship and Morticia got their comeuppance and will never again be able to wreak their evil influence. Karma be praised.

It's been fun taking part in the debate and I've been privileged to meet some really interesting people online and gain wisdom from their insights. Too numerous to name, but I think Casey, Barbara in BC, Roger (I really hope he's coping with his health problems), dr, Jeanne and W101 are among those that immediately come to mind ..

As for the resident sicko leaf and her various alter egos, all I can say is "There but for the grace of karma goes any of us ..."

A sad case, and her daddy and brothers and all those other family and friends who so terribly abused her have a lot to answer for ...

But she did do one favour for the world. The fact that she boasted of being in contact with a really nasty Finnish neo-nazi group has rebounded on THEM! She was probably just BSing and trying to convey the impression she is something other than the poor impotent loser phantasiser she really is, but her implicit and overt threats stupidly posted online have given the relevant police branch here ground to put the Surka headers under even closer surveillance than they had been.

That, of course, means contacts with other forces abroad as well. In this day of international terrorism, leafie has gone a little too far out on some very thin ice ... ☺ ☺ ☺

And she'll always have to worry who may come calling one day ...

Now His Lardship has been in the slammer for 4 months and I make it 62.3 more months to go - he'll be out around October 2013, assuming he gets the 15% off for good behaviour. I hope I'm still around to see whether he's learned the error of his ways by then.

And I hope all of my friends on the blog are likewise alive and healthy when that day comes.

It reminds me of the Finnish farmer who went to Paris with the wife for a holiday. They went into a posh restaurant and eventually noticed that the waiters seemed to be ignoring them. Waiters have an uncanny ability to recognise peasants and are quite snobbish. Finally, the farmer reached out and grabbed a waiter as he walked past and asked him: "Have you got frogs' legs?". Lit-200's good-natured sayonara makes me think of a paradox this blog had for me. I pretty well always disagreed with Lit's postings but imagine he would be a pretty likeable, interesting character to know. Conversely some posters I basically agreed with but I wonder if I could get along with them in "real life". There's a great novel-"The Masters " by C. P. Snow that goes into this enigma . There's an election for master of a college and while one candidate is obnoxious,boring, arrogant his opponent is warm, genial,witty,empathetic,etc. The problem for the hero and his friends is that the candidate with the appealing character espouses the political beliefs they detest and the dork is of their camp politically! So the novel goes into all the arguments, crises of conscience, political machinations that this dilemma provokes.

To be honest, what is so terribly awful about Leaf's apparent perversions is that no one here has demonstrated any sympathy and sensitivity to Leaf's twisted psyche. Until now, anyway. Despite my anger at Leaf's abusiveness towards others here, its terrible unproven accusations, its racist and bigotted postings, insults, cruelty, threats, etc., I actually feel very very saddened at such a wasted life , possibly a fairly decent brain that instead of channelling its intelligence towards insightful and interesting information; instead of using this intelligence for positive purposes, Leaf chooses to rage at anyone who espouses opinions that it disagrees with and the rage is so venomous, cruel, strident and just plain mean, that most here, instead of feeling sympathy for this sad example of a probable wasted life and brain, simply feel anger, fear / terror, or apathy.
Leaf has the opportunity via the internet to achieve positive feedback and instead prefers to wallow in and even enjoy the postings that hit back at Leaf's twisted drivel.

I too am concerned for you granny and I was wondering if you don’t suffer a mild but recurrent form of dyslexia. Every time I read your (affectionate) posts, I notice an unusual pattern of misplaced or missing letters.
At your age, you most likely have learned to live with it but it may impair your judgement in other ways unknown to you but obvious to others. I am not an expert but I can see with my own eyes that your dyslexia has been constant throughout the blog and that it may hide some more serious problem than misplaced letters.

Unless y'all (no effected regional vernacular either) have been living on the moon you'll have noticed that the artist who provided the terrific illustration at the top of the late lamented Spectator is the same brilliant Barry Blitt who illustrated the cover of the New Yorker this week. Go to newyorker.com and have a look. Barry is catching a lot of heat for what is actually a quite a scintillating piece of satire. So a little back-channel guerrilla action please. If you agree that Barry's work is brilliant and worthwhile say so...or not. Debate the issue and I have faith that in the end that something good will out...or not.

I saw the Blitt cartoon on The New Yorker cover and frankly, I saww nothing wrong with it and viewed it with the same as Blitt's intent - satire, pure and simple. Jack Shafer in an article in Slate got it right when he claims " Only weak thinkers fear strong images. " Those who take umbrage with Blitt's cover will and do insist that Joe Shmoe of the masses won't " get the joke " but I think more credit as well as the benefit of the doubt must be given to those out there who many are insisting won't understand the satire. Needless to say, Barry Blitt's work is super and I not only like the actual art of the cartoon in and of itself but I really and truly was amazed at how terrific his Spectator guy reading a newspaper is and was. Simply terrific! TL ought to be proud. Hell - if a magazine as respected and famous as The New Yorker thinks enough of your work to put it on its cover, hats off to Barry Blitt. I tried going to his web site but so far nothing's there except a cartoon, I think, of Blitt himself. Blitt has great talent. The New Yorker cover didn't upset me one bit and I had a good laugh at it. Simple as that.

But who is being ridiculed, and for what, in the New Yorker cover. At first blush, it looks like the New Yorker is lampooning Obama himself. You have to go through a double-think (not that there's anything wrong with that) to arrive at the conclusion that this is what some folks think about the candidate.

The cartoon would have been more forceful if it appeared in a thought balloon over the heads of a representative group of waspy Americans. However, I am sure the clever editors at the New Yorker thought of that and rejected the idea. They wanted an outcry which, of course, they got. I am not sure I would not have done the same, had the decision been mine.

The cartoon turns the traditional way of doing satire on its head since it omits the object of the lampoon. (not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Conrad Black's defence readies for U.S. Supreme Court appeal

TORONTO - Conrad Black's lawyers are preparing the legal groundwork to present his case to the U.S. Supreme Court, but first filed another appeal with the three Seventh Circuit judges who unanimously upheld his criminal conviction last month.
